Barcelona's coach Pep Guardiola said his team will need to score at least two goals at the Camp Nou next week if they are to oust AC Milan and reach the Champions League semi-finals. Having failed to snatch an away goal to take back to Catalunya, the Spaniards' boss is worried that one goal at home won't be enough.

"I think we have to score more than one to go through and we'll try to do that," he said.

"Scoring away gives you a lot, but they were lucky because they didn't even get one free-kick around the box or a corner.

"They're a very strong team and I imagine one goal won't be enough.

"The (Nou Camp) pitch will be better, it will be faster and I hope we'll play well."

Pay attention  to:

- how the teams defend: ball anticipation, support from other defenders
- how they keep possession, passing the ball back and sideways
- where do the players stand on corner kicks and free kicks?
- how did the goals happen? what allowed a goal to happen, striker's skills or defender's failure, or else?
- why did offsides occur?
- watch how the goalie initiates plays (disregard long punts)
- watch how the goalie comes out of the net in order to provide outlet for a pass or as last defender, particularly Valdes
- what do the fullbacks do when the central defender has the ball in front of his goal?
- what do players do in the midfield when they do not have the ball?
- Watch right defender Danny Alves going forward, tirelessly back and forth. How much do you think he runs in match?
- Barcelona plays a possession game: Watch what Barcelona does after losing possession.
- and don’t try to imitate the Messi guy, he is a Playstation character superimposed on the real match as a marketing gimmick, does he really exist?

Neymar Scores Another 3

This was last night in Santos. Neymar has now scored 95 goals for Santos, the 4th highest scorer after Pele.

1st goal: why did Neymar score this goal? The first player put pressure on the defender so he was forced to pass back, Neymar anticipated the ball. Anticipation: stealing balls, being always ready, reading the game, playing without the ball.

2nd goal: defenders badly positioned (nobody between player and goal) did not prevent the cross

3:40: a miss: why defenders should never be squared to the ball, and look at Neymar's scissors

5:30: Just a little touch and a red card. Why?
Pk: foot pointed to the right, at the last minute he switches to the left.

8:10: The wall position, and a shot with the outside of the foot

9:40: Another pk: why yellow card this time?

Fitness Targets for April and May

Some of our players are running the 10K at the end of May, others are not, however, all players must work on their fitness. Being fit in competitive soccer is not optional.

Below are some targets you can follow in preparation for the season.

Several players have been running and preparing and coming for running sessions, and some are already way beyond these targets. Please do submit your runs using the online fitness system.

Players: you are no longer made of rubber. Please do not forget to do your stretches and strengthening exercises to the Achilles tendon and calf muscles to avoid injuries. Otherwise you risk a nasty injury, possibly season-ending, as your coach can attest from last year. You do not want to end up in hospital either.

"El Loco" Bielsa Transforms Another Team

"El Loco" (The madman) Bielsa was the coach that transformed the Chilean squad from a lowly national squad into an attacking team that is a pleasure to watch, the team of Suazo and Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez. In a way, a team similar to the Brazilian dream squad of 82, but without  the many highly skilled Brazilian players.

Brazilian newspaper O Estado de Sao Paulo reports today on Bielsa, who now coaches Atletico de Bilbao, and has now transformed yet another team.

Bielsa refuses to grant exclusive interviews, but answers every singe question in the press conferences. If the talk turns to the intricacies of the beautiful game, a three- or even four-hour press conference is not out of the question.

A fanatic of football videos that he adds to his collection, Bielsa checks pitch measurements by pacing them out before deciding on a particular formation. He also allocates separate training times for different parts of his squad. Former Argentine national team captain Roberto Ayala and defender under Bielsa stated "Sometimes we wouldn't see any of the strikers, because he'd have them training at a different time, and it was the same with the midfielders. He's an innovator, and one of the people who I've learned most from during my career"

The passion of a coach for soccer and offensive plays constructed based on the first touch of the ball has gripped the team, and then an entire city. And now the fans of Athletic Bilbao have fun when they see the team in action shaped by Marcelo "El Loco" Bielsa.

Under his command, the "lions" - as Atletico's players have always been known, gained refinement. They continue to be brave fighters, but have learned to rely on technical quality as the best argument to dominate the opponents - whether the game is at home or away.

Last week Manchester United can attest to that. That match was the highlight of the season. Athletic involved the Red Devils from the first to the last minute and did not stop attacking with six or seven men, not even after turning the game around and making 2-1. They did so playing with the ball on the ground and using short passes, as does the Barcelona of Pep Guardiola - who has Bielsa as a model of coach and will be his opponent in the final of the Copa del Rey on May 25.

But it took a lot of work - and patience - for the team to reach the current level. The first victory in the Spanish league only came in the seventh round, after four defeats and two draws. Bielsa hammered his concepts into practice, but players could not assimilate the idea of changing their game which was based on the direct link defense with attack with a more elaborate one in which everyone should offer himself as an option to receive the pass.

WITH THE SAME CAST OF PLAYERS

The fervor with which Bielsa defends his ideas and the clarity of his arguments gradually changed the minds of players. And when they "bought" a bold proposal of the technical results and good performances began to appear.

The cast is practically the same as last season until, under the command of Joaquin Caparros, played "the English" style, with long balls and the big guy Llorente as a reference within the area. The only novelty is Ander Herrera, who belonged to Zaragoza. This only increases the merit of Bielsa, because he did not ask for a lot of hiring to change the profile of the team. He bet on the kids he found (the average age is 23.8 years) could play as he wanted and began the transformation.

Llorente is still a great definer, but now participates in most of the maneuvers. The softly Muniain, 19, went from promise to reality and with his skill and speed is a danger on the left. The defensive midfielder Javi Martinez, who was a substitute in Spain's conquest of the World 2010, was moved into the back four and is now coveted by big clubs in Europe. But no one grew more than one season to another than Iturraspe.

With Caparrós he was little used, and was low when Bielsa arrived. Now he is the indisputable owner of the position and symbolizes the 'participatory' soccer that the coach preaches. He very good at tackling and protecting the back four (his performance in Manchester was exquisite) and learned to play with one or two taps on the output of the ball.

Very pleased with the performance of the team, the president has tried to Bielsa Josu Urrutia to discuss the renewal of his contract. When he arrived in Bilbao, after refusing an offer from Inter, the Argentine was keen to sign for one year. He said it was a good run for the board to evaluate your work and decide whether you would like to extend the bond. The deadline is not over, but nobody in town think the team without him.

LTPD Update

Good news from Alex Chiet, from the OSA.

On February 26, The OSA hosted its annual Coaching Conference in Vaughan. It’s a temptation to always say that the most recent such event was “the best ever”.  Those on hand can make that determination for themselves.  But it was, at the very least, a great day, with over 400 coaches from all across the province on hand.  Rather than make the “best ever” claim—while it hopefully is true — I will focus instead on the excellence and the impact of the sessions delivered by our outstanding guest presenters.

These world-class speakers each delivered timely presentations on the most important opportunity in front of The OSA right now:  the effective implementation of Long-Term Player Development (LTPD), which we are in the process of phasing-in.

Dr. David Carr, National Staff Coach for the U.S. Soccer Federation and a renowned educator at Ohio University, conducted a Fundamentals session.  Ritchie Wilson, longtime Coach Educator with the Scottish Football Association, delivered a Learning to Train session.  Ray Clark, the Canadian Soccer Association’s Director of Coaching, worked with players in the Soccer for Life development stage.

Importantly, these experts, well-respected leaders in the field, re-affirmed that the direction we have embarked upon at The OSA is indeed the appropriate (and much needed) one for our young players across every part of the province.  So we are thrilled that the Conference was another key step in educating our membership—and so many of our influential coaches—around the attitude and culture shift we are in the midst of in Ontario soccer.

While, as I’ve remarked previously, we may not be moving quickly enough for some, we are already seeing positive “movement” as more and more Districts and Clubs embrace a player-centered, development stage-specific approach to working with our young players.  Importantly, this is being reinforced in our new Physical Literacy Coaching courses, starting with the Active Starts stage at U4, progressing through FUNdamentals, Learning to Train and Soccer for Life.  Our hope now is that, armed with the great information provided this past weekend, the hundreds of coaches who were on hand will become LTPD champions and influence and inspire fellow coaches all across the province to work closely with their players—with LTPD values always in mind.

I can add that, in the months to come, we will be sharing with you more information about our progress around the new player pathway and competitive structure.  These improvements will enhance the way we deliver the soccer experience, and ensure that, for both our recreational players and those striving for a future in the game, they—and their families—will soon be able to see and experience a clear, unified player pathway that will a) help identify more players for high-level play, and b) also provide a great soccer opportunity for all—for life.

On that note, it was great to see that the OSA Board voted this past weekend to affirm its ongoing support for staff’s efforts around LTPD implementation, with regard to continued progress in future competitive structure planning.

I should mention as well that on Saturday, February 25, our Club Head coaches’ workshop was extremely well received, with over 100 coaches and Technical Directors in attendance from across Ontario.

We also want to remind coaches at all of our Districts and Clubs, if you haven’t already done so, to register now for the new Active Start, FUNdamentals, Learn to Train and Soccer for Life workshops.  Information should be available at your local Club or District or on the OSA Website.

Thank you for your continued support.

Regards,

Alex Chiet                                                      Mark Marshall

Less Than 10% Of Children Achieving Recommended Physical Activity Through Organized Sports

Well, this certainly does not occur in our team's practices! More than 75 per cent of children in organized sports such as baseball or soccer do not reach the U.S. government's recommended amount of physical activity during their practices.

Active Healthy Kids Canada recommends children older than five get at least 90 mins a dat  — through play, games, recreation and active transportation like cycling.

A U.S. study shows that under 10% do!

"National guidelines in the U.S. recommend that children and teens perform 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, but fewer than half of children and 10 per cent of teens meet these guidelines.

The study in Monday's issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine looked at 200 youth age seven to 14 in the U.S. who played on soccer, baseball or softball teams.

The athletes wore accelerometers — sensors that measure physical activity — around their waists during practices. Parents filled out surveys with information about the demographics of the family as well as details about the children's ages, racial and ethnic background, height and Players spent an average of 30 minutes being inactive during each practice, researchers found. weight.Players spent an average of 30 minutes being inactive during each practice, researchers found.

Overall, only 24 per cent of participants met the 60-minute physical activity recommendation during practice, with rates differing by sport and age group.

"There clearly are opportunities to increase physical activity in youth sports," the Desiree Leek of San Diego State University and University of California and co-authors wrote.

"Based on current findings, it appears that youth sports practices are making a less-than-optimal contribution to the public health goals of increasing physical activity and preventing childhood obesity."

Fewer than 10 per cent of participants age 11 to 14 years and fewer than two per cent of girl softball players reached the guideline.

The players spent an average of 30 minutes being inactive during each practice, which ranged in length from 40 to 130 minutes for soccer and 35 to 217 minutes for baseball or softball.
Increasing activity

"There clearly are opportunities to increase physical activity in youth sports," Desiree Leek of San Diego State University and the University of California and co-authors wrote.

"Based on current findings, it appears that youth sports practices are making a less-than-optimal contribution to the public health goals of increasing physical activity and preventing childhood obesity."

During soccer practices, the participants gained 44 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity compared with 41 minutes for baseball and softball practices.

Girls got less of this type of physical activity than boys during sports practices.

The researchers suggested several ways to increase physical activity during practices, including:

  • Emphasizing participation over competition.
  • Sponsoring teams for all skill levels across all ages.
  • Ensuring access by lower-income youth with sliding scales for fees.
  • Increasing practice frequency.
  • Extending short seasons.
  • Using pedometers or accelerometers to monitor physical activity periodically during practices.
  • Providing coaches with strategies to increase physical activity.
  • Supporting youth and parents in obtaining adequate physical activity on non-practice days.

Previous research on school-based physical education classes showed that putting more emphasis on keeping youth active while they learn skills and team strategies increases the amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity, Russell Pate and Dr. Jennifer O'Neill said in a journal editorial accompanying the study.

Pate and O'Neill are with the department of exercise science at the University of South Carolina.
More than sports

Pate and O'Neill said health care providers should not hesitate to encourage parents to involve children in well-organized and properly supervised sports.

But parents should know that not all sports programs are created equal when it comes to providing physical activity.

"Parents should be informed that, while youth sports programs can be an important source of physical activity for youth, it is very unlikely that most young people will meet current physical activity guidelines only through organized sports programs," the editorial said.

"School physical education, informal physical activity in home or neighbourhood settings, and active transport to and from school can and should be important sources of physical activity for most American youth."

More research is needed on the amount and intensity of exercise that youth get from sports and recreation, including dance lessons and outdoor programs like rock climbing, the editorial urged.
