Practice April 30

Parents: reminder that all players must wear white shirts to practice, either the ones they got from us or a shirt that is 95%+ white.

Good weather finally today! The coach has an injured ankle so we could not go for a run :-(

Adamo scored the best goal of the night, it was a beauty.

The 11+ (see 11+ link on top) is designed to prevent injuries in soccer players by working on flexibility and core muscle strength. As the coach is doing it too, he can attest to how hard it is if you are not used to working on all muscles (he is barely able to walk the day after).

Watery Practice April 26

A little water does not deter these players. We had our best run of the season as a group, 4.3Km, all the way to the Woodroffe HS bridge.

Gustavo won races 1 to the top of the bridge, also winning race 2 to the Queensway stop, and Francois won race 3 back to the school. With Dylan all three were among the top 3 in all races. Kudos to all players however, it was a great run.

It was hot in here!

Some in shorts and tshirts!

Robben's Cow Feint

Did you see Robben's cow move yesterday?

Is he saying "Mooooooo"?

Did you watch Real Madrid vs Bayern yesterday? It was an example of how not to defend, and how not to take pks.

Looks at Bayern's defense line.

This one is actually good for defending: back 4 + 6 in front of them. All midfield players must help the defense. The problem with this is that all 11 red players are playing defense, thus the white team is free to attack with 11 too.

Can you guess what is wrong with this red defensive formation?

You can guess what happens next:

Since there was only one red player marking the white attacker, he had no support, the white beat him.

Senegal are making their first appearance at the games, having negotiated their way through last night’s play-off game in Coventry against Oman, winning 2-0. UAE are making their debut in the tournament, being the only unseeded AFC team to make it through the qualifying tournament the games, making it out of a tough group containing Australia, Iraq and Uzbekistan. Uruguay are making their first appearance at the games since the dominance back in the 1920s, where the side won gold at both Paris 1924 and Amsterdam 1928.
Group B
Mexico are making their ninth appearance at the games, coming in as the winners of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament, but no team from the region has won a medal in over 100 years. Korea Republic are the recent stalwarts of the competition, having appeared in the last seven competitions (since Seoul hosted the games in 1988) but only reached knockout stages once – in Athens 2004. Gabon are making their debut in the tournament, but come into the games as the winner of the CAF qualifying tournament. Switzerland make their first appearance at the Olympics for over 80 years, after impressing many to finish second in the UEFA European U-21 Football Championships.
Group C
Brazil triumphed at the 2011 South American Youth Championship to make their way to the games, with an Olympic gold the only major football tournament the nation has yet to win, claiming two silver and two bronze medals in the last 30 years. Egypt are the African team who have qualified the most times for the games (11), but this will be their first appearance in 20 years and are yet to claim a medal. Belarus make their first appearance at the games. They were the surprise package at the UEFA European U-21 Football Championships qualifying from their group by the tightest of margins before going on to beat the Czech Republic in the Olympic play-off. New Zealand make their second successive appearance, having never qualified for a tournament before Beijing 2008.
Group D
Spain come into the tournament as winners of the UEFA European U-21 Football Championships and are the most successful European side of the last 30 years, winning gold at Barcelona 1992 and silver eight years later. Japan have appeared in the last five tournaments and are Asia’s only ever medal winners, claiming bronze at Mexico 1968. They are also Asia’s joint most successful qualifiers. Honduras are appearing in their second successive tournament and third overall – all coming since the turn of the millennium. Morocco are now Africa’s second most successful side in Olympic qualifying (seven), overtaking former gold medal winners Cameroon and Nigeria with this summer’s appearance.

Women’s Groups

Group E
Great Britain arrive as hosts, making their first appearance in the tournament and as a women’s team full stop. New Zealand make their second appearance at the games, finishing tenth in Beijing 2008, having beaten Papua New Guniea to make it to this year’s games. Cameroon make their debut appearance at the games, having seen off tournament regulars Nigeria on penalties in the CAF Women’s Pre-Olympic tournament. Brazil come into the tournament after two successive silver medal finishes, having made it to the final four in every tournament so far, with Marta leading them to victory in the South American Women’s Football Championship and qualification this time around.

Group F
Japan come into the tournament as FIFA Women’s World Cup winners, after having a fantastic 2011, and narrowly missed out on the bronze medal at the last tournament’s instalment. Canada make their second trip to the games, following an eighth place finish at Beijing 2008, having finished second to the USA in the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament – where captain Christine Sinclair top scored with nine goals. Sweden have appeared at every edition of the women’s tournament, reaching the bronze medal match in Athens 2004, and reach London 2012 having finished third at FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011. South Africa make their debut at the tournament after seeing off Ethiopia in their final game of the CAF Women’s Pre-Olympic tournament.

Group G
In five instalments of the competition so far the USA have been in every final, only losing once – to Norway at Sydney 2000, and reach this year’s games after triumphing at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament. France make it to their first Olympic games having finished fourth at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup as the second highest finishing European side. Colombia also are taking part in their first games, having finished as runners-up to Brazil in the South American Women’s Football Championship. Korea DPR made their deput at Beijing 2008, where they finished ninth, before finishing second in the Women Asian’s Qualifiers to make it to London 2012.

Practice Jerseys

Yesterday the players have started receiving practice jerseys, at no cost. This is unique to our team. They are really nice plain white dry-fit performance jerseys. These are to be worn to every practice. The reason is that it allows players to wear pinnies on top and make two very distinguishable teams, something we have been struggling with.

The players will receive club uniforms in mid May. The 2nd (alternate) color uniform is actually the same shirt they are receiving now, but with the club logo and number on the back. So in total, the players are receiving 3 shirts/jerseys. We are paying for this 3rd one ourselves (no charge to parents), and there is no cost either for the match jerseys.

We ask that all players take very good care of this shirt. They are not to be worn for anything other than practices (i.e, do not wear them at school). Players may wear other plain white tshirts to practice if they wish (as in 99% white), and they may wear other jerseys to practice, as long as they bring white ones with them and out them ion when we request.

Extra practice shirts may be ordered for $10 each. Please let us know ASAP.

Fitness Report and Targets For This Week

We are very happy to report that we have crossed the 500Km mark in total team distance ran since February. Way to go team! Current distance ran is 528.5Km.

Players should be running 4.5Km on their own this week (7.5Km for those running the 10K in May). Note that you may run in the rain too, you won't get sick from that.

We had 12 fantastic players participating with runs in April so far (thank you!), and 19 team members submitting runs in April. Gustavo and Philip are in the lead for the monthly fitness award. Caroline, Trevor's mom,  has already run 105Km this month alone, very impressive. Dylan and Luisa are tied for the fastest run at 12.89Km/h.

Only fit players can play matches! We have less than one month to go now. It is imperative that players work on their fitness on their own.

Kindly submit your runs using our online system.

Practice April 19

Yesterday the intention was to run for 20 mins, we reduced it to 12 minutes as several players were really struggling.

The 3 leaders shuffling. They ended up  lapping quite a few players.

I'm chasing something, not sure what... I hope it's the ball!

Coach, do *you* have the ball?

Has anyone seen the ball? I thought it was right here!

Bad Defensive Positioning: Real Madrid vs Bayern

Real Madrid (white) vs Bayern (red) played Tuesday.

Look at the way Real was positioning defenders: What is wrong with this? Is this how we teach you how the support player should be positioned?

Time: 88:45

and the defenders are betane - by one man.

Now look at the next sequence, immediately afterwards:

Time: 88:56

Is this proper support?

If the attacker beats the first player...

He is now free to cross:

Guess who is celebrating and why...
