Match May 31

Great performance by the boys today, sticking to the plan. Well played by all. An MVP star goes to Venance for creating the goals, for passing the ball for others to score.

Canadian Kids Get an "F" For Not Doing Enough Physical Activity

Not good news, from the CBC:

"Many Canadian kids are failing to make the grade when it comes to reaching physical activity targets, with too few hours devoted to active play and too much free time fixated on TV,computer and game screens".

Active Healthy Kids Canada released its annual Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth  which paints a grim picture of the activity levels of many Canadian youngsters.

Jumping rope, tag, hide-and-seek and Red Rover may conjure fond memories for many adults where such spontaneous outdoor activities were staples of childhood. But the 2012 report card finds today's kids aren't spending sufficient time engaged in active play.

An "F" grade was assigned in active play and leisure, with 46 per cent Canadian kids getting three hours or less of active play each week — including weekends. What's more, 63 per cent of kids' free time after school and on weekends is spent being sedentary.

At lunch and after school, kids are getting only 24 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. It is recommended children and youth get at least 60 minutes of such activity daily.

Mark Tremblay, chief scientific officer of Active Healthy Kids Canada, said active play is often the "overlooked sibling" of the physical activity equation.

"It doesn't have to be complicated, it doesn't have to be equipment-intensive, it doesn't have to be led by us, the parents or the playground supervisor or the coach or anyone," "This is the business of childhood: let kids play or reduce the suppression of their natural desire to play."

Beyond reducing sedentary behaviour — activities that involve little physical movement and a low expenditure of energy — there are many beneficial byproducts of active play, noted Tremblay:

"(Kids) develop physically, mentally, emotionally, environmentally through active play, through interaction with different environments, different movement experiences."

But whether it's kids glued to TVs, computers or games or parental phobias about potential dangers, screen time and safety worries are seen as barriers limiting opportunities for outdoor play.

The report finds kids in Grades 6 to 12 spend seven hours, 48 minutes each day on screens. That figure outpaces the recommendation of no more than two hours of screen time daily.

Active time for family

For parents feeling pinched for time, parents can also integrate kids in everyday activities.

"Kids can help us do yardwork, or even if you are out there cutting the lawn, your kids can be playing at the same time," said Murumets, whose organization is launching a play-focused campaign this fall. "You can keep an eye on them, you're doing your thing and they're doing their thing."

Unstructured activities

Tamara Grand works at the Port Moody Recreation Complex and also trains private clients, mainly women in their late 30s into their 60s. But despite her busy schedule, the wife and mother of three works to ensure her kids stay active. Her 13-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter participate in taekwondo, while her seven-year-old son plays ball hockey.

Beyond structured activities, the kids will spend most weekdays outdoors for an hour after school, with hockey nets, scooters and soccer balls or brainstorming different games. Weekend walks are also part of the family routine.

"They love their electronics like most kids their age, and I think if we didn't encourage them to get off they would probably spend most of their day on them," said Grand, noting computer time is limited to after school and a little bit after dinner.

The 44-year-old, who blogs at http://fitknitchick.com, said one of the things she observes among many clients is a tendency to overstructure kids' activity time. While their kids get lots of activity playing hockey and soccer or going to dance and gymnastics, they tend not to have time for unstructured play.

"That worries me, because when I was growing up it was all unstructured time. It was 'Go outside we'll call you when dinner's ready' and we just found our own things to do."

Grand said she encourages her clients to lead by example when it comes to getting kids moving.
"We spend way too much time focusing on work and things that fill up our day, like Facebook and social media — things which I find I'm guilty of because it's partly my job," she said.

"But if we really want our kids to get more physically active we have to do it first and show them — not tell them."

Seeking Donations

Message from St. Anthony's below about families in need.

Monti played with us last winter and is a call-up. He is a very nice kid and fantastic player. On behalf of our team I am donating $100 to Monti's family, to be given this Thursday night or Saturday at the Icebreaker. If you wish to join, please let me know.

"As you have probably heard by now, two families (4 players) of St. Anthony suffered a tragedy.  Ahmed (U10) and Montthy's (U12) home burnt down last week.   As well, one of our families of the Rochester Community Program (Elhage and Fatima Bah) recently had a fire in their kitchen and are staying in a hotel until the renovations in the house are complete.

Thankfully no one was hurt but Ahmed and Montthy's family lost everything they owned and the other family lost all kitchen items as well, many of their other belongings have a smoke smell.

I am reaching out to ask for donations to help them through this tough time in their life.

Anything you could give would be appreciated".

Practice May 28

Found a spot where out home field was ours and not too crowded:

Please note that several requests have been sent from the coach and the club's director to clubs and to the city looking for a new field. The ball is rolling.

Some of the parents know that the situation with the fields has been going for months and is a much bigger problem city-wide. Please have a bit more patience.

Let's see... on the plus side the kids were fascinated by the ice cream truck that showed up. Apparently, most had never seen one in their lives!

Ice cream anyone?

A Priceless Weekend

Another Ottawa Race Weekend has gone by, another super event put together by the organizers and the many hundreds of volunteers. We cannot thank them enough.

For the coach, this was a priceless weekend. The boys learned how to control their own races and also to be not only physically, but also mentally prepared. The strategy was simple: pace yourself at the beginning, so you have the energy to fully control your race in the 2nd half (and not let fatigue control you). Factors like heat, hills, wind, and the crowd become less relevant. The interaction with the marathoners on Sunday was also really nice. Priceless indeed!

Of course, there was a lot of hard work in practicing ahead of time and being in shape. The boys who participated never said a single word of complaint. Hats off to them. Moreover, they like running. Hopefully they will keep running their entire lives. Congratulations, and a huge thank you to them.

We are very fortunate to have this world-class event in our city.

Other stories and photos:

American Lindsey Scherf unexpectedly won the 10K on Saturday by using a very different strategy. She pushed really hard in the beginning, running around 2m 30s per Km (!), forcing her competitors to match her, and in the process losing their plans. Talk about a mental race.

We saw Batman yesterday, he is on the paper today (Batman lives in Montreal and comes to run in Ottawa every year):

Come Cheer Your U13 Team Runners

Please come and cheer your St. Anthony's U13 soccer runners this Saturday!

The Ottawa Race Weekend is this Saturday afternoon. This is the top annual event in Ottawa after Canada Day. Please come and cheer our team's runners. The 5K is at 5PM and the 10K starts at 6:30PM at the corner of Elgin and Laurier, there are many world-class athletes participating. The women start 4-5 minutes earlier, and there is a big prize depending on whether a man or a woman finishes first.

We think, if all goes well, that we will finish the 10K between 55 and 58 minutes chip time. The arrival is at the canal (Queen Elizabeth) just south of Laurier. Please come and cheer our players on.

5K and 10K runners are excused from soccer practice in the AM.

On Sunday AM, the top marathoners go by Wellington and Athlone around 7:20/7:30AM. We plan on being there as well to cheer them on. This is a terrific opportunity to see some of the top marathoners in the world up close, and a lot of fun, see the amazing speed they have.

Beautiful Almonte

Our first real match was a very difficult one, but Almonte is always beautiful!

MVP for the match, chosen by the coaches: Adamo, will full stars going once again to Francois as well for stepping up to the plate once again, and earning an official shutout.

A difficult soccer game, but our kids found a way to prevail.
